"...there’s so much drama ... on the march toward redemption..."

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/25/theater/reviews/25powe.html

"And so it was I entered the broken world"

Κάποια αποσπάσματα από το εξαιρετικό βιβλίο του Vernon Valentine Palmer, "Through the Codes Darkly. Slave Law and Civil Law in Louisiana", 2012:

"France possessed a vast and lucrative overseas slave empire, but there was not a single word about slavery or empire in the Civil Code of 1804, nor in any of the preparatory projects. Slavery had not been recognized in France proper since medieval times. A proud and ancient maxim declared the Freedom Principle: "Nul n'est esclave en France.". French slavery was essentially overseas; its day-to-day inhumanity was out of sight, and the regulations pertaining to slaves were conveniently compartmentalized in what was called "colonial law". ...
The decision to exclude slavery from the Code Civil suited the design and fit the philosophy of the French redactors. They systematically resisted the incorporation of special legislation of all kinds into the Code civil, but in this case their objection was indeed more than technical. Slavery was an embarrassment to the professed ideology of the Republic. For slavery was more than "contrary to reason" in  the Roman law sense. It was a glaring violation of the principles of the French Revolution. As Robespierre, a member of Les Amis des Noirs, told the National Assembly: "From the moment you pronounce the word 'slaves', you will have pronounced either your dishonor or the reversal of your constitution. ... Let the colonies die if you must keep them at that price." Napoleon feared no such dishonor and sought militarily to reimpose slavery in the colonies. Yet to mar the Code named after him with the baseness of slavery would have been unthinkable." (p. 124-125).

"In my view the slave jurisprudence of Louisiana was unique, not only in the United States, but in any other jurisdiction where slavery existed. It had the benefit of systematic sources both in the Digest of 1808 and Code of 1825 and in the Spanish-Roman ius commune. It will be remembered that these were the only civil codes in history to incorporate this subject within their provisions. This allowed the Supreme Court to build a coherent jurisprudence through a process of interpretation, deduction and analogy. The sheer size of the Louisiana Supreme Court's output - one thousand two hundred cases by that court alone - made it into a specialist on the subject." (p. 160)

(epigraph, at the beginning of: "Streetcar named desire", Tennessee Williams):

"And so it was I entered the broken world
To trace the visionary company of love, its voice
An instant in the wind (I know not whither hurled)
But not for long to hold each desperate choice

"The human body is a project"

Από το πολύ ενδιαφέρον βιβλίο του Terry Eagleton, "Materialism", Yale University Press, 2016:

"LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN REMARKS in his Philosophical Investigations that if you want an image of the soul, you should take a look at the human body. He means, one takes it, the body in action rather than the body as object. Practice constitutes the body rather in the sense that, for Wittgenstein, the meaning of a sign is its use. The human body is a project, a medium of signification, a point from which a world is organised. It is a mode of agency, a form of communion and interaction with others, a way of being with them rather than simply alongside them". (p. 36)

"The body lies at the source of the various ways we are bound up with one other, which is why the word can be used to denote a collective phenomenon ('a body of ferocious Corsican pirates') as well as an individual one. It is what gives us a field of activity, a field which is in no sense external to it. In On Certainty, Wittgenstein professed himself puzzled by the phrase 'the external world'. 'External to what?' is perhaps what he had in mind. Certainly not to ourselves. Because we are incarnate creatures, we are as much in the world as are our sewage systems. The world is not an object set over against us, to be contemplated from some elusive location within our skulls." (p. 37)

"Our consciousness, to use a term of which Wittgenstein is properly sceptical, is inscribed on our bodies rather in the way that the meaning is present in a word. We are not present in our bodies in the way that a soldier squats in a tank. In this sense, the body itself is a kind of sign. As Jean-Luc Nancy remarks, it is 'a sign of itself', rather than of some reality distinct from it." (p. 40)
